TARNISHING THE IMAGE OF KENYAN UNIVERSITIES

Moi university just an example?
Protests and rioting in Kenyan universities have become so frequent as breakfast in Kenya; but not even breakfast is frequent because of the poverty situation in the country. University students have always used force to get their views heard when diplomacy fails to work.

This is the tragedy of university education training students on use of force by protests and rioting to pass their grievances. Not even one university in Kenya has been exception.
Five days ago; on Thursday to be specific; Moi university students took into the campus streets protesting the dirty and worrying  environmental situation in the university premises more so the residential halls. The situation also resulted from university workers taking care of the environment striking for poor working conditions.
The vice chancellor claimed not to know the real environmental situation in the university; a claim that  made students force him to visit almost all wash- rooms in the hostels. The students chanted songs of disrespect to the highest office in the institution.

Surprisingly; the workers were instructed to come back to work on the same day and cleaning of hostels commenced bringing back the situation to normal.
From the analytical mind, the action real indicates to students the power of force . It creates a mentality that in order for them to be heard, they must protest.
This is an indication that students have been directly and indirectly trained on rotten morals. The Kenyan university management should therefore create proper communication mechanisms between management, students and university staff to bring sanity to the institution.
The claim of the students that strikes and protests are the best way to get them heard is not only arrogant but completely misguided.
